How do I order gold plated / sterling silver items from online sellers?

I'd like to buy a few products like a sterling silver compact mirror and a gold plated bracelet from Ebay.com for personal use. Not gold per se. Will these products reach me without attracting import duty? I'm very unclear about the rules and can't seem to find the info online anywhere. In case import duty is levied on things like this then what are the percentages involved? And how do I pay?? Any help will be most appreciated.
Anyone around here who's ever done this? I'm sure someone somewhere in India has done this before. Can someone tell me how the notification (in case import duty is to be levied) is sent to the receiver?
