what is the definition of solid gold.?As in solid gold bracelet.Does it mean not plated ?
Solid gold means just that. The item is made out of gold and nothing else. Gold is alloyed (mixed) with other material because pure gold, 24 karat, is so soft and weak that it won't hold a shape very well. It is easily bent and deformed. Items made from alloyed gold materials are still considered to be solid gold with the stamp that shows the karat or blend of the material used to make the item.
There are basically three constructions of gold articles.
Solid, filled, and plated. Solid is the same material all the way through, Whatever blend or purity (karat) that it is made from.
Gold filled has a piece inside that is the same shape as the finished item but smaller. Gold is then pressed around the form and is thicker than plated. It will wear for a long time. By law the total amount of gold on the piece must be at least 1/20 the weight of the completed item.
Gold plated is a finished full dimension, or size, part usually made from brass, that has just a few microns (a very, very, small thickness) of gold flashed onto the surface. The gold is so thin that it virtually doesn't make the item any larger. It is just enough to make it gold in color. Plating has no legal requirements on how thick the gold layer is, so it can be anything from one atom that you could rub of with your thumb, to enough to wear for several years.
Gold filled articles are popular because you get the advantages of gold at a lower cost than solid gold, and the parts are strong and durable.
Quality items are filled or solid. 14 karat is 58% gold, and is a popular alloy (blend) that gives a good color/strength balance at a moderate cost. 24 karat is pure gold and is so soft that it can be squished into sheets that are so thin that you can see through it.
